No gear: drip bags and instant with low acidity

More options in drip bags and instant and cold brew. Many people find cold brew smoother.

Your coffee tastes sour? Fix it when you brew

Sour coffee is often under-brewed: the water didn't take enough out of the coffee. Change one thing at a time:

  1. Grind a little finer. Water then takes more flavor out of the coffee.
  2. Use hotter water, about 92–96 °C, just off the boil.
  3. Brew a bit longer, for example 30 seconds more for a pour-over.
  4. Let fresh beans rest. Beans roasted 1–2 days ago can taste sharp; many roasters suggest waiting about a week (養豆).
  5. Add milk. Milk softens acidity, and chocolatey medium roasts work well in a latte.

Why do some coffees taste more sour?

Common questions

Is dark roast less sour?

It tastes less bright, yes. But it can taste more bitter, so a medium roast is often the best middle point.

Why is my dark roast still sour?

Usually the brew: the grind is too coarse, the water too cold or the brew too short. Try the steps above.

Is cold brew less sour?

Many people find it smoother and less bitter than hot coffee. See cold brew bags and their price per cup.

Is low-acid coffee better for my stomach?

This page is about taste, not health. If coffee bothers your stomach, ask a doctor.

How we make these guides: every 3 days we open each coffee's page on the shop and write down the price it shows that day; the lists on this page update with it. Acidity and roast are our estimates from the seller's flavor notes. We earn a commission when you buy through our links; it never changes your price. We review this page every 3 months.
