Where coffee grows in Taiwan
The areas of the beans on our list, from the lowest price per 100 g:
- Taiwu (Pingtung): 1 on our list, NT$153 per 100 g
- Alishan (Chiayi): 3 on our list, NT$368–800 per 100 g

Coffee also grows in other places, such as Nantou, Hualien and Taitung. We add them when we find bags we can compare.
Why does Taiwan coffee cost more?
- Very little of it: Taiwan grows a tiny amount of coffee compared with Ethiopia, Colombia or Brazil, and most farms are small.
- Hand work on hills: the cherries are picked by hand on steep land, and wages and land cost more than in most coffee countries.
- Small batches: many bags are roasted to order and sold in 100–225 g bags, which costs more per 100 g.
Careful: an "Alishan blend" is not always all Alishan
Read the label. When it says 綜合 (blend) and a percentage, only that part is Taiwanese coffee. On our list:
- Alishan Blend Drip Bags (60) (UCC): Blend with 10% Alishan coffee, NT$721
Common questions
What does Taiwan coffee taste like?
Often gentle and sweet, with notes like black tea, honey or ripe fruit, and not much bitterness. It shows best as a pour-over or a light to medium roast.
Where can I buy Taiwan coffee beans?
On momo (all the bags in the table above with "momo"), from farmers' associations such as 古坑農會, and from small roasters who buy from the farms. If you visit Alishan or Gukeng, many farms sell their own beans.
Are award-winning Taiwan beans better?
We don't rank coffees by competitions. If a bag says 冠軍 (champion), look for the competition name, the year and the lot, and compare the price per 100 g with the table above.
Is Taiwan coffee a good gift?
Yes, a small 100–115 g bag is an easy way to share something local. Most Taiwan beans on our list come in small bags. More ideas in coffee gifts by budget.
How we make these guides: every 3 days we open each coffee's page on the shop and write down the price it shows that day; the tables on this page update with it. "Imported beans" means the other whole beans on our list, without decaf. Flavor notes come from the seller's listing. We earn a commission when you buy through our links; it never changes your price. We review this page every 3 months.
